Big Cat Sightings in Scotland in 1999

This is Scottish Big Cats compilation of non-native cat sightings for 1999. The reports come either from sightings sent directly to us or from newspaper reports.

July	Island of Colonsay, Argyll & Bute	Dark brown, no discernible markings, much bigger than a Scottish wild cat, body length and height about the size of a collie, but with a really long bushy tail. Slim body	Seen at 50 yards for 20 seconds by two witnesses. Made loud yowling noise
July	Aberdeenshire	Big Cat	Reported to be captured on CCTV. Confusion with Telford footage a week later?
1 st July	Buckie - Mulben road, Moray	Large cat		Mick Orsi
10 th July	Nr Newton Stewart, Galloway	Large black animal, more than twice the size of a normal cat with a very bulky coat.	Padding about in the bushes. Failed police search.
17 th July	Whiteford village, near Pitcaple, Aberdeenshire	'Pather-like', slightly smaller than a Labrador dog, long tail.	'cruised' into undergrowth.
28 th July	A6112 nr Preston, Berwickshire, Scottish Borders		The witness subsequently heard the animal's cries from her home in Duns. Several earlier sightings in the same area	Fortean Times
August	Woodland nr Keith, Moray	Black and similar in size to a small snow leopard	Seen diving into woodland by a walker. Numerous other sightings in area.
27 th August	Mulben, Aberdeen	Big cat, about the size of a labrador, very long tail sleek. Not as tall as expected - about 22 in tall, about 4ft long. Smaller than any of the African big cats, like a puma or panther.	Casually walked across the road, took no notice of car. Seen by Kingston big cat enthusiast
Mid October	Rhegreanogh, nr Lochinver, west coast of the Highlands	Brown or fawn coloured	Seen at 500 yds.	Fortean Times
late October	Blair Forest near Crosshill, South Ayrshire	Puma-like, similar to a big German Shepherd and light brown in colour. Didn't have Lynx tufts on the ears, and the tail was very long. Last part of the tail appeared to have some stripes on it	Seen for 15-20 seconds at 100 ft
November	Near Dechmont, West Lothian, 11.30 pm on clear night	Visibly cat like in appearance. Eyes reflected green, characteristic of cat. Head feline, but very powerful.	Seen from car for twenty minutes. Cat stalked slowly round to within 30 yards of car.
28 th November	B7052 between Sorbie and Garlieston, nr Wigtown, Dumfries & Galloway	Puma
late November	Half mile from Fauldhouse, West Lothian	Brown cat with a round face, stocky and very agile, about the size of a spaniel	rummaging through black rubbish bags, then ran off
December	Ashludie, Monifieth, Angus	Sheep's leg found	Big cat possible suspect
1 st December	Rogie Falls, Wester Ross	Creature walking in the road ahead	Seen by motorist at 5 feet
13 th December	A77 from Kilmarnock to Glasgow at Fenwick Moor nr, Meanskirk, East Ayrshire	Large black cat, distinctly cat-shaped head, broad shoulders and a long tail	Seen from bus emerging from a clump of trees, skulking down low and moving slowly as if stalking something
23 rd December	Newmilns, East Ayrshire	'Tiger-like' creature, 'like a black Labrador dog'	Walking across a field
