Sir, The correspondence from A.B. Fuchter on large cats and the article on the attack on the woman in Aberdeenshire by a large black animal were interesting.
Last June my parents and I were driving between Windygates and Auchtermuchty and were going down Portersbrae when I saw what I initially thought was a large black lamb amongst some new tree planting.
Slowing down to look, I was thinking that we'd not seen any lambs because of foot-and-mouth and here was a solitary one.
By the time we'd stopped we had a clear side view.
We couldn't believe our eyes. This animal was about the height of our whippet but much heavier - it had a long thick black tail and a slinky feline walk.
It was certainly not a lamb or a dog and definitely not a domestic cat.
We didn't go looking for strange beasts - I didn't know there had been any previous sightings in Fife although my parents did.
We don't have overactive imaginations and we had a very clear view for approximately five minutes before it wandered off.
Unfortunately we didn't have a camera but I don't know if we'd been able to use it as we were so amazed at what we saw!
