Puma print? The huge pawprint compared with a £1 coin
This footprint may be proof that a giant killer cat is on the loose, slaughtering livestock and spreading fear among farmers and country dwellers.
Police in Fife have begun an investigation after several sightings and reports of farm animals being torn to pieces.
Officers are convinced the beast is a wild puma which could be living near Easter Clatto farm, St Andrews. Farm owner Bill Carswell was the latest to sight the animal when he cornered it on his land.
He said: 'I was driving down the farm road when I saw a huge beast in the beam of my headlights. It was a cat but it was nearly three feet high and extremely powerful.
'It was the most fightening thing I have ever seen.'
