Big Cat sighting near Dunure
July 1987
An off duty RMP along with his wife and three small children travelling along the road from Denure to the main road, (Culzean Castle to the left) Around 22.00hrs. As they approached the end of the road, a large "jet-black cat bounded into the middle of the road", stopped turned and looked at the car with "blazing emerald green eyes" then effortlessly bounded with one leap into the hedge and out of sight. ....... tail half as long as its body that trailed down in a curve to the ground .....size of a fully grown Lab ...... caught in headlights and silouhetted against a bright, darkening blue sky. The whole incident lasted 3 to 4 seconds, but the sight is etched in their memory for good, now! The witnesses at first headed for the Ayr police station to report the incident, but decided against it.
