South of the Moray Firth, on 29 September 1977 Mr John Jenkins, together with his son and nephew, spotted a lioness with two cubs at 5.30 pm. They watched the animals from a distance of about 20 ft in a field at Crask, Farr, 10 miles south of Inverness.
The following day a similar sighting was reported from near Culduthel, Inverness.
Later a report was received by the police that two witnesses had seen three cub-like animals about 5 miles from Farr. The animals were seen in the car's headlights and described as grey in colour with short cat-like faces. The witnesses were both country-bred and stated that the animals were definitely not wild cats, foxes or badgers.
