A proposal to release walruses into Loch Fyne, a sea loch in Argyll, has been attacked by locals and by conservationists. Sir Charles Maclean, the son of war hero and writer Fitzroy Maclean, suggests that they would be a tourist attraction. But local oyster farmers are concerned about the appetite of walruses and their ability to decimate oyster stocks. Wildlife experts have also described the plan as cruel, since walruses are more used to cold Arctic ice floes than a warm (relatively) Scottish sea loch. Importing walruses would require to be licensed by the Scottish Office.
