A FIVE-year project to eradicate mink from the Uists could begin next year after Scottish Natural Heritage pledged £443,000 towards the £1.65 million needed.
The project is also being backed by the Scottish executive, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Western Isles Enterprise, RSPB and Central Science Laboratory .
Mink have been in the Western Isles since the sixties, after being released or escaping from fur farms. There are 10,000 breeding females, causing serious problems for native wildlife, agriculture, sporting fisheries and aquaculture.
