Report from Chris Smith
As the first of the rescued hedgehogs from benbecula and north Uist put its tiny feet on Ayrshire soil yesterday, it was revealed that celebrities who volunteered to give them homes will have to join a long queue of animal lovers who have offered them safe havens.
Offers to re-house the prickly animals, including those from Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Tim Rice, and the Duke and Duchess of Hamilton, flooded in after their plight was highlighted recently. This emerged as the first batch of 31 hedgehogs rescued from the mass cull arrived yesterday at Hessilhead Wildlife Rescure Centre in Beith, where staff liberated them from the cardboard boxes in which they were transported. They will be relocated in the next few days, some in Kirkcudbrightshire, but most in gardens and woods in north Ayrshire, Glasgow and Renfrewshire.
The hedgehogs, which looked in perfect shape after a 12-hour jourey by road and ferry, will be handed over to animal lovers whose gardens and local areas have alreday been checked.
Meanwhile, a salmon-munching seal which strayed into the River leven and was due to be shot on Wednesday, has been given a stay of execution - much to the dismay of local anglers - to allow te SSPCA to make a second attempt on Sunday to remove it.
