Stalked by a strange animal by Bennachie

In the mid-90's I was in Aberdeenshire and one night, coming back from the local pub we were stalked by something in the woods at the side of the road. Whatever it was walked along side us about 15-20 feet from the road. When we stopped walking it would stop and when we started it would start again. We called on it in case it was a dog but there was no response. When the wooded stretch of the road ended it stopped.
I went back the following day and it would have been next to impossible for a human to walk through the undergrowth in the dark without falling over - it was bad enough during the day. So it remains a mystery but, what got me inspired was that it was in Beast of Bennachie country.
