Report from Phil Crosby
I received a phone call Sunday evening 23rd February from a man in
Stewarton, Ayrshire, who had seen a cat around 8 p.m. that same day.
He was parked in an area where a sheep had died recently
(natural causes). When he turned his lights on, around
40 metres away and coming downhill towards him was a large feline. It
turned and bounded away to his left when the light came on.
He described it
as being the size of a Labrador with a tail over half the length of its
body, and that it appeared dark but not black. He also commented that it had
rained earlier that evening so animal may look darker than normal. He says
he couldn't describe the face or ears in detail because it was still a
little way away and moved quickly.
The spot was north of Stewarton, and the area is mainly
farmland, but there are extensive areas of woodland further uphill, and the
area has a high population of roe deer. At present the sheep are lambing and
he believes some farmers are dumping bodies in a certain dense wooded area
to avoid the new & expensive disposal process brought in since foot & mouth,
and that this may be providing an attractive and easy food supply to keep a
big cat in the area.
