Report from Mike Inglis
FEARS THAT the black beast of Angus has struck again were voiced yesterday after the body of a mutilated swan was found.
'Retired photographer Arthur Milligan discovered the disembowelled bird in a field next to, his home at Pitscandly Park, Lunanhead, near Forfar.
"I've been a country boy all my life and never seen anything so ferocious happen to a bird as that," he said "It was torn to bits.
"It took something big to make such a mess. The first thing that came into my mind was the big black cat we are hearing so much about."
Whatever killed the swan had to jump four-foot-high sheep fencing and clear it on the way out-which, he said, ruled out foxes. And only a large animal could have been responsible for the crush injuries found on the swan's neck.
Tayside Police were told of the dead swan, a protected species, and collected the carcase to begin inquiries. A force, wildlife liaison officer is expected to carry out an investigation today.
