Sir,
Operation Big Cat has tried to raise funding through Government departments and local authorities with which to commence our trapping operations. Unfortunately, the Government refuses to accept that these animals exist and is therefore unable to sponsor us.
We all know that feral big cats do exist, even though the Government denies this, and we are particularly concerned for the safety of these animals.
Operation Big Cat is aware of a lynx being killed in North-east Suffolk in late 1997. How this creature died is anyone's guess. Others end up as road casualties and die in agony, or they starve to death of their injuries. Until these animals are officially recognised they are not a protected species in this country.
Anyone can kill them by virtually any means they may decide to use. We intend to campaign for official recognition of these creatures. We will then campaign to have them added as a protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
We have no funding or assets of any kind.
We are desperately in need of a vehicle and traps. We also need funding for running costs such as postage, stationary and bait.
In a bid to raise this funding, we have formed the Big Cat Club. Membership set at £5 per annum.
Members will receive an initial list of feral big cat sightings for their county, (We have these for 34 counties, including a few for Inverness, and we hope that the people of Scotland will help us update our national register of feral big cat sightings.) an annual newsletter and a final list of sightings at the end of their term of membership, from which they can access the spread of big cats across their county.
We need the British people to rally round us.
We cannot complete our national register of British Big Cat sightings without them, nor can we trap and catch these animals to prove once and for all that they really do exist.
Yours etc. Bob Engledow, Joint Co-ordinator; Operation Big Cat.
