Report from Chris Smith
Sir,
The Exotic Animal Register was set up to monitor reports of all non-British fauna said to have escaped or been released into the British countryside. These animals include boar, wallabies and of course big cats such as puma and panther-like cats. The EAR has been in contact with a number of farmers who have had big cat problems and has discussed the matter with zoologists and naturalists. As big cats have been reported from your area in the past, I wonder could I appeal for anyone who has seen, or sees, a big cat, to write to EAR in confidence if necessary. Likewise any farmer or other persons who believe that they have had livestock killed by a big cat should register the kill with us, but no anonymous callers/writers please. My telephone number is (0117) 9631903.
Farmers who may have a big cat problem can ask us for advice on the problem, (again in confidence) as we have talked to a number of farmers already experiencing difficulties.
Yours: Terry Hooper.
