A puma-like animal was spotted this week about three miles North of Fort Augustus. Lorry driver Colin MacKay, 51, Tenafelle, Muir of Ord, was driving on the A82, Inverness-Fort William road on Tuesday at daybreak when a large cat-like animal broke cover, bounded across the road and disappeared into the trees.
Mr. MacKay said later he had been driving in the Highlands for 12 years and had never seen anything like it. He was certain it was a large cat and in view of sightings of cat-like creatures in other areas, had reported his sighting to the police.
There were reports earlier this year of a large cat-like animal in Aberdeenshire, further fuelled by the discovery of mutilated sheep carcasses. In the 1970's and 80's there were frequent reports of sightings of similar creatures throughout the Highlands, culminating in the capture of a puma near Cannich.
The animal, given the name Felicity, was later caged at Kincraig Wild Life Park until it died about eight years ago. It is now stuffed and mounted in the foyer of Inverness Museum and Art Gallery.
