Report from Chris Smith
The phenomena of the mystery cats was largely forgotten until the mid 1970s. In June 1974, near Beith in Ayrshire, a motorist pulled up sharply when he found a large cat sitting in the road. The cat refused to move, simply growling at both car and driver. Eventually, the driver carefully manoeuvred the car around the animal and sped off.
John Jackson saw the animal in 1974 when he was driving his taxi to Beith, he said: "It was sitting on its haunches in the middle of the road and I was forced to stop. I was within a few feet of it and my headlights were full on - but it would not move. I waited for about five minutes, then drove round it. In doing so my car brushed aside it and it growled."
