It is said that pictures of "black tigers" exist, however many experts do not believe that these beasts are melanistic tigers. They state that when a tiger feeds on a large animal, such as a buffalo, it may become covered in blood which gives the animal a black appearance when the blood dries. The existence of true melanistic tigers has never been verified.
However, there have been tigers with light coloured stripes on a black background like the skin shown here which was recovered from smugglers in 1992 and the tiger cub with dark markings on its legs.
